Easy Rainbow Rice Recipe That is Vinegar Free

Rainbow rice is so much fun and can be reused time and time again. Our first batch of rainbow rice lasted at least a year. It reached the point of not being able to take the smell any longer, I kept waiting for it to wear off but that never happened. For our newest batch of rice, we decided to make vinegar free rainbow rice; I am so glad that we decided to try this because the colors turned out perfect and so vibrant!

The process to make the rice is incredibly easy and there are not many items needed to make it. After dying the rice, I let it sit out overnight to fully dry. Once dry, the opportunities for play are endless! Rainbow rice is our most common sensory bin filler. The sensation as you squeeze a handful is amazing, even as an adult I cannot help but touch it. Sensory play is so beneficial for children on so many levels. Michigan State University states,”It is the foundation of all the skills children will use in school learning to read, write and solve math and science problems. Once a child has these experiences, they are able to draw upon the body memory and cognitive memory of their experiences when faced with new situations. Further, the process of observation is a skill in and of itself. Keen observation skills give a child an advantage in school and throughout life.”

Our favorite activity with rainbow rice is setting up a baking area. I grab an over-sized container to catch extra rice and so much scooping and pouring follows. Adding a muffin tray was so much fun! The tray became cupcakes, muffins, mini pizzas, ice cream scoops and more; I added wool balls to mix in as toppings. I incorporated a few play kitchen items as well for measuring and mixing, this invitation to play was repeated for a couple of days!

WHAT IS NEEDED:

  1. White Rice (best for bright colors IMO)
  2. Liquid Watercolor
  3. Paper plates
  4. Ziplock baggies

HOW TO:

  1. Scoop 1 CUP of white rice to a large baggie
  2. Add 1 TBSP liquid watercolor to the baggie
  3. Shake the bag, *this is lots of fun for little ones if you would like to incorporate them in the process of making your rainbow rice. *
  4. Pour colored rice onto a paper plate to dry overnight
  5. Repeat for as many colors of rice as you would like to make! Also, if you notice that not all of your rice is covered, feel free to add extra liquid watercolor.
  6. Once dry, play and have fun! Once your play is complete store in an airtight container between uses.
