easy ball run

Ball runs have become one of my daughter’s favorite invitations to play but learning how to create them took a lot of practice. Below are more than fifteen ball run inspirations and the sets used to create each.

Table of Contents

    Why Build Ball Runs?

Invitations to play are very popular in our home and blocks are our main toy. We build ball runs because of the excitement it creates for everyone. Building with blocks has been shown to have many benefits including:

    • Spatial awareness
    • Improved concentration
    • Improved hand-eye coordination
    • Abstract thinking
    • Creative expression
    • Problem solving
    • Patience
    • Persistence

What Do I Need To Build a Ball Run?

The items required to build different runs can vary. The more complex of a run completed, the more sets that will be needed. A few of my favorite ball run sets are:

    • Grimms Large Rainbow
    • Grimms Semi Circles
    • Grimms Slopes
    • Grimms Building Boards
    • Grimms Large Stepped Pyramid
    • Grimms 1001 Nights
    • Grimms Bridges
    • Avdar Rainbow Slats
    • Maple + Lark Spelling Tiles

    A Basic Ball Run

To familiarize yourself with building ball runs, this is a great basic build. To complete this I only used one large 12 piece rainbow and a large ball.

    The Sound of Ball Runs

Ball runs are not only beautiful to look at, they sound amazing as well. Our favorite sound is the wooden ball running down the Grimms Stepped Roofs.

    • Grimms Building Boards
    • Grimms Basic Building Set

    The Elevation of Ball Runs

Building a ball run can be very particular. The elevation between each section is something that factors into how smoothly the ball will flow. You will notice in the side view of this run, the elevation has a slow progression; think slow and steady.

    The Intricacy of Ball Runs

As ball runs evolve, you will notice how adding a turn can add such intricacy. Every little movement the ball makes and the positioning of blocks matters. Focus on clean lines when building and test your run as you build.

Builds can grow vertically or you can add fun tricks. Catching the ball in the Grapat Lola tube proved to be quite the challenge but was a lot of fun. The Avdar Rainbow Slats were great to keep the ball rolling on the track.

    Non Traditional Ball Runs

And it is always fun to get creative and build a run that seems totally off the wall. Setting a challenge to incorporate certain sets or objects is something I have found to be a lot of fun. Below are two examples I set for myself, one to incorporate our Pikler Triangle and the other our Rainbow Rocker.

I am sure you noticed a trend in sets used for ball runs. I often grab a little bit from each set but the Grimms Large Stepped Pyramid, Stepped Roofs, Building Boards, Rainbow, and Semi Cirlces seem to be my go to sets. Happy Playing!
